Yaay! I became a Xamarin Certified Mobile Developer! :D

So finally on 9th of June 2017, I became a Xamarin Certified Mobile Developer. So here’s my experience of the whole Xamarin University, Certification Exam, and some tips and tricks that might help you! 🙂

Well I’ve been using Xamarin Platform for over 2 and half years now, but I never really thought of getting the official Xamarin Certification until recently my boss encouraged me to and financially supported it.

Down the memory lane of my Mobile Development enthusiasm…

So here’s a little sharing of memories down the memory lane and some tips for getting the Xamarin Certification.

I first started off developing mobile apps on Android platform, given my love for Java programming back in the early days. So I self learned Android App Development back in the middle of 1st year of my college using online tutorials and documentation.

Then at the end of 1st year, I was introduced to Windows Phone App development, which I got completely hooked on it, and then Windows Store App Development and so on, where I ended up publishing over 20+ apps to the Microsoft App Store during the next few years.

Next lucky enough I got a mobile developer opportunity at a medium size local company where it was for Xamarin Mobile Development back in 2014 December. 😀

Learning the whole Xamarin Platform by myself, I ended up completing a full fledged mobile app for that project in that company using Xamarin Forms.

Finally in 2015 December, got an overseas opportunity in Singapore for a Xamarin Mobile Developer position, which is where I ended up mastering the Xamarin Platform, Xamarin Android/iOS native development, hacking to push boundaries of the platform and so on and finally living my dream of being a Mobile App Developer. 😀

And that is where I’m currently working at June 2017, enjoying everyday of it while diving in the goodness of Xamarin Mobile Development. 😉

Xamarin University Training and Certification Preparation…

I was lucky enough my company sponsored me for Xamarin University Subscription. Otherwise its about 1000 USD for 1 year subscription or there a new monthly subscription plan with a very reasonable pricing.

Once you have the subscription you get full access for all the incredible learning materials and live lecture sessions in Xamarin University.

Is it worth it?

Now although at this point I already had like 2 years of Xamarin Mobile developement experience, I must admit that I learned way more and strengthened my knowledge on Xamarin top to bottom thanks to Xamarin University. So if you ask me if it’s worth it? at least for the Knowledge? DEFINITELY YES!

Mandatory Sessions

There’s a mandatory list of sessions that you have to complete before taking the exam, you could completely them either by attending the live lecture sessions or taking self-learn sessions (if available). Yes, some of those mandatory sessions doesn’t have the ‘self-learn’ option yet, so you have to attend to a live lecture session and get your attendance marked for it. 🙂

Instructors?

Mark my words, the instructors in Xamarin University are top-notch, and industry experts with a lot of knowledge and experience, there’s no doubt about them. You can ask anything from them regarding the session, even while the session is going on, they are very helpful and friendly, not to mention their great teaching skills. 🙂

Memorizing vs Understanding!

Do not MEMORIZE! just UNDERSTAND the content! The sessions are structured in a way that it helps you to actually understand the content with step by step exercises. I’ve never taken a single note on any of the sessions, nor tried to memorize stuff(although I’m not very good at it either), just followed through sessions and focused well during them. That’s all it takes!

Anything else?

You can take any live lecture session as many times as you wish, until you feel comfortable with the topic. There’s also many extra sessions you could attend to improve your knowledge in Azure, UI Test, Xamarin Android, Xamarin iOS. It’s good to keep in mind that the exam mandatory sessions are mainly about Xamarin Forms cross platform related topics, so you don’t have to worry if you don’t have much in-depth knowledge about native mobile development. 🙂

They also provide you a Study-Guide check-list to go through to make sure you’re prepared for what’s actually required: https://university.xamarin.com/content/certification#study-guide

Once you’ve completed the mandatory sessions, then you become eligible to sit for the certification exam!

Certification Examination!

So the Certificate Exam is a 3 hours, MCQ exam (Multiple Choice Question) which has 150 questions, and you should score over 80% in order to pass the exam.

The questions scope…

The questions are going to be completely based on the mandatory sessions in Xamarin University. Heavily focused on the Xamarin.Forms cross platform related topics. Personally I did not get any questions that are out of the scope.

So how were the questions…

If you’ve got a solid knowledge on the mandatory sessions, then you have nothing to worry about. Not keep this in mind, about 40% of the questions are straight and easy, but the rest are not going to be hard, but tricky, meaning it’s going to be little bit twisted, so you need to pay good attention to the details in each question before you pick the answer. 😉

Understand the content in the sessions, not memorize!

Basically you won’t be able to make it through the exam if you’re just trying to ‘memorize’ everything in your head, you need to have a ‘good understanding’ of the session content, in order to answer the tricky 60% of the questions.

After the exam?

Once you finish the exam, you get the results immediately. 😉 Then its time to PARRTTAAYYY!!! 😀

Xamarin University and Certification benefits!

First of all the incredible amount of knowledge and experience you gain in the whole process of Xamairn University and the Certification is priceless.

Not to mention the global recognition as Xamarin Certified Mobile Developer, having the official certificate directly validates you as someone who actually knows your way around Xamarin-stuff. Although it does not prove you as an ‘expert’, which is totally dependent on your personal industry experience.

Access to Xamarin DevConnect portal, to showcase your portfolio and connect with fellow developers.

There are few other awesome benefits you get according to Xamarin official site as follows. Certification is valid for 1 year from the date you have passed the exam. Certifications can be verified on our public Xamarin Certified Developers page.

Receive a badge, fun Xamarin swag, and an invitation to join the official Xamarin Certified Developers community on LinkedIn.

Cool, so what do I get to show off?

Except for the massive amount of knowledge and experience I gained from the Xamarin University Sessions and Training, here are some other show-off stuff I got after being certified.

So brace yourselves for some self promotional bragging! 😛

Xamarin Certified Developer Verification Online:

https://university.xamarin.com/certification?q=Udara@xamariners.com#verify

You get a link that can be shared online for the verification of your Certification status. This is the source you could include in your LinkedIn or personal portfolio for the verification.

Xamarin University Profile Badge:

Once you get the certification, your Xamarin University profile gets updated as such.

Xamarin Certified Developer Certification (soft copy):

You actually get a PDF version of your certification (here is a screenshot of it).

Bunch of Xamarin Certified Developer badge Images (HD):

Then you get a whole bunch of Certified Mobile Developer badges in low, mid and high resolution for you to share on any of your websites or portfolios. 🙂

Xamarin DevConnect Profile:

You get access to Xamarin DevConnect, the official Xamarin Certified Developer portal from Xamarin, where you can publish your portfolio, connect with fellow certified developers from all over the world, and open up yourself for new opportunities.

https://devconnect.xamarin.com/profile/389

Well that’s it all I got for now… 😀

Although some claim that you get kind of a Xamarin souvenir trophy and a goodie bag by mail, but I’m yet to get any of that. lol. *fingers cross* 😛

So If anyone needs any help or clarifications regarding Xamarin Certification, I’m more than happy to help, drop me a mail or comment down in the post. 🙂

Good luck everyone with your Xamarin Certification! 🙂

So I just bought a new Sony Xperia Z3 Compact from Sri Lanka

After almost 3 years of awesomeness with my Nokia Lumia 820, it had come to a point that I needed to buy a new smartphone. 😀 I really enjoyed my time with Lumia 820, but to be honest since last year I was kind of getting bored of it. And its started having a few hardware issues, such as random network disconnecting, and the camera photos were getting blurred and so on. 😦 So it was high time to switch after almost 3 years… 😀

Love at First Sight… 😉

This time I went for Sony, which had been my favorite Smartphone brand since long time back. I always loved their amazing design, build quality and specially awesome features. 😉 I was never a fan of enormous screen sized smartphones, which in my opinion completely ruins the definition of a mobile phone. So I was looking for a small screen sized phone, and fortunately I found out about Sony Xperia Z3 Compact which is the compact model of Xperia Z3 ! 😀
I literally fell in love with this phone since the first sight of it. So I did some in depth research about this phone before deciding I was gonna buy it.

Phobia of Precautions… 😦

And very disappointingly some users of Xperia Z3 and Z3 Compact models has complained about some ‘Self cracking screen issue‘ which got me very skeptical. I went through so many user forums, Sony forums, XDA forums regarding this issue and there were complains from a lot of people and they were saying that Sony doesn’t cover this in warranty, but however in some News report Sony had agreed that there was some defected stock has been released by accident. But all in all I somehow decided to buy this phone, as there were a lot more users who had reported saying they weren’t having such an issue, which was bit of a relief.

Final decision was taken… 😀

So I straightened up my mind, wishing for the best, I decided to buy this awesome smartphone, Sony Xperia Z3 Compact … 😉

xperia-z3-compact-white-1240x840-f40248bb3132354ba48c58041e244284[1]

Deciding on a Mobile Phone Shop to buy in Sri Lanka…

So when I stepped outside the house to buy this phone, I decided to buy this from a well known reputed mobile phone shop, rather than going for the lowest price from a small shop, specially because of the above ‘Self cracking screen issue‘ that some Xperia Z3C users were having. By the time I was looking for this phone it cost around Rs. 57,000 – Rs. 59,000 so obviously not much of a difference whether you buy from a small shop or a bigger shop. After visiting a few popular shops around Colombo I found out that none of the shops in Sri Lanka would cover such an issue (Self cracking screen issue) with the warranty, everyone was saying if we are able to prove that it’s a manufacturer fault, only then they would repair it. So I realized there’s no point of worrying about the warranty as every single shop here offers the same crappy warranty, I somehow bought it from Dialcom in Sri Lanka for Rs. 59,900 after a few of my friends’ recommendation. (which actually drained over half of my bank account 😛 )

So here it is, the thing of Beauty and Awesomeness…

From the moment of unpacking it, it was a thing of wonder… 😉

From the moment you unlock that screen, is like entering into a whole new world of beauty.. 😀 the screen, is epical indeed with its TRILUMINOS Display and X-Reality Engine, which truly brings an amazing display…

I never expected such a high quality headset with the phone.. 🙂 oh well, Thank you Sony ! Except for that it’s just the charger and the USB cable you get in the box.

WP_20150510_16_29_44_Pro

It was a truly surprise with the performance in such a compact device, Quad-core 2.5 GHz Krait 400 Processor and GPU, Adreno 330 seems to be paying up over the expectations…

WP_20150510_16_29_53_Pro WP_20150510_16_30_10_Pro WP_20150510_16_30_20_Pro

In some reviews they had mentioned the sound quality is not that good in this device, but for me with those front dual speakers, it gives an awesome experience for watching movies and videos…

One of the best things about this awesome smartphone is that it fits so perfectly in hand, specially for someone like myself having a comparably small palm.. 😛
It gives a truly premium feel of a mobile device when you hold this in your hand, durable tempered glass panels on front and back sides, along with the round comfortable edges give a real amazing feeling…

WP_20150510_16_30_48_Pro

A defect or not ? 😦

So I was playing around with the phone for a while, holding it with both hands 😛 , well you know the excitement you get when you first use your new mobile phone, whereas you hold it very carefully worrying every second whether your would drop it… 😉

Anyhow after a while I realized that the Sim Card cover flap kept slowly open, every single time I close the flap it kept on popping open very slowly. The most annoying thing was it slowly pops open after 20 mins every single time I closed it.

Below is a close up picture I took for this issue…

Closing the Sim Card flapWP_20150511_09_20_31_Pro

After 20 Mins… WP_20150511_09_51_14_Pro

Another side-close up of before and after 20 mins…

WP_20150511_09_20_20_Pro

WP_20150511_09_51_08_Pro

I was sick worried about this issue, I thought it would get fixed after sometime , but it didn’t. Then also it hit me that when I first opened the box I saw that this same flap had popped out, but I didn’t take it to much consideration as I had just opened the box and it popped out only after 20 mins. I was wondering whether this phone is also one of those defected phones that Sony had release…

Thankfully, it was fixed… 😀

So the next day I took it to Dialcom, they checked it and cleaned the cover flap with some liquid, which surprisingly fixed it. They said that this happens to most of the Xperia models when they are right out of the factory, and it’s not a big issue whereas it only occurs due to some oil liquid being contacted with the flap during the manufacturing.

So keep in mind, if you are buying this phone, when you first open up the box and any of the Sim card or SD card cover flaps are popped out open, then make sure to inform them and get the flaps cleaned up. So that you won’t go through the same burden I went through…

Oh well now it works perfectly… 🙂 Thanks Dialcom for saving me from a heart attack. But I’m still a bit skeptical whereas this is also one from the defected stock Sony has released. Therefore I will keep a careful watch and update this post.

Conclusion

Now that was my entire experience with before and after buying this phone… Yes ! I’m literally in love with this phone, and I gotta tell you this is one of the best smartphones I have ever experienced.

If you are like me, who doesn’t prefer bigass screen phones, then this is definitely the Smartphone you should go for… pretty sure you will not regret it.. 😉

I have always been extremely passionate about Innovation and Creativity, and as a result of that I used to invent new things using whatever I learned. Even back in School Days I used to develop new inventions and win awards at competitions. That drove me to University, while studying Software Engineering, I always used to build new software tools y my self in whatever the theory that we learned during lectures, whereas most of the time I got too obsessed and I went ahead learning everything by myself about any specific subject.
I have always dreamed of solving real life problems through new inventions and ideas, which is still the force that drives me forward. So as a result of my passion towards innovations and experimentation, I happened be developing so many softwares and apps which I had published to the public market. This sparked me the idea of initiating a startup of my own which I could drive through my passion. So here it is, Ladies and Gentlemen, Welcome to  ÇøŋfuzëÐ SøurcëÇødë Tech Innovations !

Therefore we came up with this simple solution, a centralized portal for viewing all Sri Lankan Photography, “Sri Lankan Photography”! the Amazing Sinhala Language <3 !

Most of us Sri Lankans don’t know this, but Sinhala language is one of the most complex and evolved languages ever existed, so as Tamil language !
Why do you think us Sri Lankans whoever is fluent in Sinhala has the ability to learn and speak any language very easily with the exact native pronunciations of them ? Its because Sinhala is comprised with every single syllable possible, the language itself has prepared us with almost every single way of pronunciation without us knowing.
Why do you think Japanese, Chinese, German or Russian natives have such a different accent when they speak in English, but us Sri Lankans could speak in the very exact native accent of English ? Thats the amazing beauty of Sinhala language. Though it is much ignored by the current society, whereas people think speaking in your native language is a shame, or a ‘gode-kama’ ! Sigh ! Just pure stupidity and western colonization mindset of Sri Lankans !

– Just thought of noting down the above few words while going through the below article,

Things I HATE, about Windows Phone!

We all know that there are so many things to LOVE about Windows Phone, and everyone is talking about them all over everywhere. So I was thinking why not talk about the things I HATE about Windows Phone being a huge Windows Phone as my self. Now I know what you are thinking, if I am such a huge fan, how could I have any reasons to hate it, very well just FYI, I always keep an open mind despite whatever my likes and dislikes are 😉 !
Now I must say these are based on my personal Experience with my Lumia 820 and Windows Phone 8 Version. 🙂

The keyboard

I have been an Android user for about two years back, and I have been pretty much of a heavy “texter” using the touch keyboard. With that Sony Android Keyboard experience here is my feelings with my new experience with the Windows Phone Keyboard.

Word Suggestions are so damn slow. The word suggestions are so damn slow, as in even to get a bloody word suggestion we have to type more than 50% of the letters of the particular word. SIGH !

No Automated Learning of the new words typed by the user. And if we wanna make the keyboard learn a new word, we have to manually add that by double tapping on the word while in the middle of typing. Which is extremely retarded. OMG Seriously dude ?

No proper intelligence of the Keyboard or Auto Suggestions or User keywords learning. In simple words, for me, Windows Phone keyboard is SO FUCKING DUMB ! I mean serious WTF is this shit, Microsoft could have done so much better than this seriously for a bloody keyboard. Not even a bit of intelligence, the auto suggestions suck balls, and its so bloody slow and dumb compared to Android, which is much faster and amazingly intelligent.

The Lock Screen

Yeah it sucks big time. At least Android has some pretty dotted line pattern connecting mechanism for their lock screen, and for gods sake anyone could customize it the way they want and make so epic. Alright lets keep that aside, Look at the lock screen of the
Windows Phone, its the same boring crap all over again, the number code.

At the beginning there were some rumours about an introducing of a touch pattern for the lock screen of a windows phone, and people expected a much better or a unique on Windows Phone 8 release, but still nothing ! OMG that is so sad. I am literally fed up of the bloody boring crappy lock screen I’m not using any lock screen anymore on my Windows Phone. Microsoft, you better work on this for gods sake !

Web Browser

Oki when it comes to a mobile Web browser plays a very significant role, because that is like the general gateway to access the internet despite of the Apps. Oh really ? Yeah everyone knows that ! but does Microsoft know that ? or the Windows Phone team ? :O

Serious the default web browser in Windows Phone is the worst browsing experience I ever had since my very old Nokia phone web browser.

Yeah !  the default web browser is a total shiaaat !  Hope most of you have experience with the crappy browser of Windows Phone. Most of the sites with modern OPEN GL, HTML 5, JQuery does not work properly, well most of the time does not work at all with this crappy browser. And it is such a pain in the a**. All those stunning and cool web graphics can even be opened in the Windows Phone web browser.

There is completely no way to replace the Default Web browser in Windows Phone.  Alright it is fine that Windows Phone team at Microsoft has failed to build a better browser for Windows Phone, but they haven’t even given any space for the User to replace their crappy browser with a better one, if there are any better web browsers for Windows Phone. Withe their bullshit restricted system permissions, this isn’t even close to being possible. Everyone is stuck with their default shiiiiiiiat ! -____-

Popular Apps suck ! except for Some !

Have you used Facebook app on Android ? or iPhone ? aaaaaand then have you ever used the Facebook app for Windows Phone ? 😛 I know right ! OMG the official App for Windows Phone sucks big time, literally. I mean there is very less options, features and graphics. And the app crashes constantly out of nowhere.

We all have amazing experiences  with those most popular apps on Android and iPhone, such as Facebook, twitter, instagram and so on. Well after a while those apps also came into Windows Phone marketplace and everyone was so excited. But turned out to be a total disappointing experience.  I have used the Android app for Facebook, I mean I loved it, it had all the features , beautiful and easy to use User Interface all of that. But then when I used the Facebook app for Windows Phone, OMG ! It was a huuuuuuuge mess !

I think this is because of the restricted nature of the Windows Phone app development platform. Considering the fact that Android and iOS app development platforms has given almost all the access for the Mobile device’s hardware and software features from the SDK but when it comes to Windows Phone it is very restricted. So the developers can’t, well actually pretty much hard to recreate the same great experiences we had on those same apps on Android and iOS. 🙂 Now that is a huge drawback for Windows Phone. I think it would have been better like, if they had discussed and given some more special access to those companies through the SDK to develop rich experienced applications.

But this situation is actually getting better, I recently used the Faceboo Beta app for Windows Phone, turned out to be so much better than the official one in the Store. And also same with Twitter and Instagram. But there are so many popular apps out there in other platforms who are struggling to provide the same fantastic experience for their users on Windows Phone, due to the strictness in the Windows Phone Development Platform.

No Seek Bar on Media Players

This may have not been a huge issue for everyone, but there is no go damn Seek bar in the Music player and the default Video Player in Windows Phone. I mean THE SEEK bar is like a very  basic requirement in any Media Player app, but unfortunately Windows Phone ! 😦 Sigh. Which is a huge disadvantage specially watching movies.

Bing Maps is a useless mess in Sri Lanka

Yeah to be frank, Bing Maps is a total shitty Joke in Sri Lanka. If you are a Windows Phone user from Sri Lanka you may know what a pain in the a** it is to use Bing Maps in Sri Lanka. I mean most of the Roads, Shops, and Places can not be found on Bing Maps in Sri Lanka, I mean even for any emergency the Bing Map search returns nothing at all. It is an utter waste to even try to use Bing maps in Sri Lanka, even though somewhat the roads are a bit accurate.

Not only bing maps, their series of Places, Location and Direction based apps are not working at all in Sri Lanka for the most part such as City Lens, HERE Drive and so on. This is a huge mess, I mean even if you try to find a place bear by to Eat, it is merely impossible only one or two places will be shown out of ten, even though for the most part it shows nothing at all. I sometimes wonder whether this is because Sri Lanka is a third world country and they don’t give a rats a** about third world countries ? 😛
As a past Android user I must say, Google Maps shows almost everything with 100% accuracy, finding any place or location or even roads. Personally for me this was a huge disappointment as a user who uses Maps to navigate all the time.

The map can not be rotated as the User wish, only Zoom in and Zoom out options are available. Seriously ? I mean WTF ? When it comes to even a paper map we always rotate it this side and that side when we are trying to navigate. But in Bing Maps ? NO ROTATING ! Sigh 😦 ! Hopefully I wish they would look into these issues in Windows 8.1 update. 🙂

So that is it for now… as a Fan Boy thoughts on Windows Phone. You might say why such hatred if you call your self a Windows Phone Fan boy ? 😛 Well human, I always keep my mind open doesn’t matter whatever I love and I like to see everything as they truly are in every aspect. 😉

ADIOS FOLKS ! 😀
